DIY TUTORIAL
YOU WILL NEED:
Some helpful tools and accessories we'd recommend to help you on your way; Anchor Nails, Joining Tape, Adhesive (hard surfaces) Sand Infill, Tape Measure, Utility Knife, Stiff Bristled Broom or Power Broom, Shovel, Seed Dropper (optional)
STEP 1:
MEASURE UP YOUR SPACE
Start by measuring the length and width of the area to make sure you purchase the right amount of synthetic grass.
STEP 2:
PREPARING THE SURFACE
Ensure the crush rock surface you want to install your synthetic turf on is smooth and even. Installing synthetic turf is a two-person job, so ask someone to help you with this DIY project.
STEP 3:
ROLLING OUT AND TRIMMING
Starting at the edge of the area, roll out the turf until you reach the end. Use the utility knife to cut the turf slightly longer than it needs to be, you can trim it to size later. Make sure the turf is smooth and hard-up against the edges of the garden, Then cut it to size with your utility knife.
TIP: Make sure the blades of grass are running in the same direction
STEP 4:
CUT AROUND OBSTRUCTIONS
To cut around any obstructions such as trees, downpipes or pavers, measure the overlap and mark that distance out on the turf. Cut the turf along the areas you have marked and butt the two sides together.
TIP: If you don't have a border to use as a cutting guideline, use a straight edge and utility knife to help keep cuts straight.
STEP 5:
SECURE THE TURF
Secure the turf along any edges by using the anchor nails, or if fixing to a hard surface use the double sided tape to the perimeter. When nailing make sure grass fibres are pulled back so the join is not visible once nailed in. It's recommended to space the nails 200-300mm apart.
STEP 6a:
JOINING THE TURF (SMALLER JOINS)
Roll out the adhesive joining tape on top of the turf and cut it to size. Fold back the edges of both pieces of turf where they need to be joined. Peel the backing paper off the adhesive tape and put half of the tape under the edge of the first length of turf you laid facing up, ensuring the adhesive strip is centred to your two joins. Move down the length of the turf and press it down so it sticks to the adhesive tape, then fold the other half over onto the tape and press down to stick, ensuring no fibres are caught in the join.
STEP 6b:
JOINING THE TURF (WITH ADHESIVE & FABRIC)
Use the joining fabric & glue to join the two pieces together. First roll out the joining fabric and cut it to size, then fold back the edges of both pieces of turf where they need to be joined. Roll out the joining fabric under where you want to make the joins, ensuring the joining tape is centred to your two joins. Then spread the synthetic turf glue using a notch trowel. Fold back the two pieces of turf and press down on the join to make it stick.
STEP 7:
BONDING THE TURF TO THE GLUE
To ensure the backing has made full contact with the glue or adhesive strip, roll over the join thoroughly using the synthetic grass joining roller.
STEP 8:
SAND THE GRASS
Using a stiff bristled broom, brush the grass fibres open, then spread sand evenly by cutting the sand bag at the top and distributing the sand evenly with a shovel, in a sifting motion.
TIP: For best results, distribute the sand when the grass is dry so it is easier to spread. We recommend using a seed spreader for this process. Once the sand is spread, use the broom again to brush in the sand evenly across the grass.
