Upon arriving at Golden Square Primary Tuff Turf were introduced to quite a common site at school ovals around Australia, a well maintained AFL/cricket field, basketball courts, playground and large dusty area joining all three spaces that used to be grass and now house’s weeds in summer and becomes a mud pit in winter. Our clients brief was simple, please make this an aesthetically pleasing space while functional for students of all ages.
Tuff Turf hit the drawing board and came up with a conceptual design which was an instant hit with the school. We designed a scaled down Soccer pitch to capitalize on this sports growing popularity which accounted for 80% of our working space. We were able to incorporate a 4 lane 25metre sprint track for the kids to use and this would also a great asset for the schools Physical Education department. Using the existing slope at the rear of the Soccer pitch, we designed a turf mound creating a lounging area for the kids to sit and watch sports being played or simply relax in the shade which also assisted with disguising a significant change in levels.
During construction, Tuff Turf were able to work in with existing levels and blend heights to obtain a flat and safe playing surface. Tuff Turf’s Terracotta 18mm sports grass made for a great visual change of colour and texture while providing a highly functional, low maintenance running surface the students to use at their leisure.
Upon completion, Tuff Turf were proud to handover a project that exceeded our client’s original brief and their expectations. Golden Square Primary School is no longer a dust bowl in summer and mud pit in winter but is now an aesthetically pleasing, low maintenance and highly functional area that encourages all students to enjoy being outdoors, active & interacting with each other.
