Taking on One of Australia’s Largest School Sporting Facilities

The St Kevin’s College Sporting Complex redevelopment stands as one of the most ambitious school-based sporting infrastructure projects delivered in Australia at the time. After a challenging early phase that saw the expansive site sit idle, Tuff Group was engaged to take over from a previous contractor and bring the vision to completion. What followed was the successful delivery of a fully integrated, elite-standard sporting precinct built for performance, resilience and long-term value.

The project scope was extensive and technically demanding. Tuff Group delivered every major sports surface across the precinct, including three FIFA-certified soccer fields, an AFL football ground, a National FIH-approved hockey facility, a sandwich system national-standard athletics track, cricket wickets and training infrastructure, and twelve tennis courts.

Coordinating multiple international sporting codes within a single site required tailored construction methodologies, meticulous sequencing and rigorous quality assurance at every stage.

The sheer scale of the site, combined with tight access constraints and a compressed program, presented significant logistical challenges. Despite this, the project was delivered over a nine-month construction period through close collaboration with 2Construct, Dalton Consulting Engineers, Case Meallin & Associates and the leadership team at St Kevin’s College. From the outset, the objective was clear: to deliver elite-quality facilities befitting one of Australia’s leading educational institutions.

Sustainability was a core consideration throughout the build. All synthetic surfacing systems were selected with end-of-life recyclability in mind, contributing to an estimated diversion of more than 1,200 tonnes of material from landfill. This future-focused approach ensures the precinct remains both environmentally responsible and economically sound over its lifecycle.

Today, the completed complex provides St Kevin’s College with a high-performing, all-weather sporting environment that supports elite training, multi-sport programming and student wellbeing. The quality of the original construction continues to be reflected in the condition of the fields, supported by Tuff Group’s ongoing high-frequency maintenance program, which has preserved performance and appearance well beyond typical expectations.

The success of the project also laid the foundation for long-term partnerships, with Tuff Group going on to deliver additional works for the College and associated stakeholders. For everyone involved, the St Kevin’s College Sporting Complex remains a source of pride and a benchmark for large-scale educational sporting infrastructure.
